Davis Lake Outing, May 21-23

Rich Lanza sez: Big Trout are waiting at Davis. Camping is on the south east of Davis Lake, but the best fly fishing is at the North West. Bring a boat, or a vehicle capable of getting into rough and muddy situations (4WD is best bet) if you need to drive into the North West area to fish. Expect COLD weather! Be prepared! Snow and or rain are possible. This is a very tenuous time of year there.

Davis lake is about 4 to 5 hours, (an hour beyond Truckee?) depending on your comfort level with winding roads and speed, and of course, weather.

Take your 5 weight rod. Float tubes are good. Water is cold. Use intermediate lines for fishing snail imitations, and use Damselfly nymphs on floating lines.

Rich can be contacted at 835-6065.

The Prez Sez

Amazin' stuff happens to us opportunists...

Have you been fishing? Have you noticed how you feel when you are fishing? I fish because I feel good when I fish. I could say it is totally a selfish pleasure.I take the opportunity to feel good. But why go fishing otherwise? It's an opportunity to take in the outdoors, without a lawnmower in your hands. It's an opportunity to be on the water when the sun comes up, yet again, and say a silent thankyou for yet another opportunity. It comes down to siezing the day, the opportunity to veg out, or grow in appreciation, or just be selfishly pleased.

Carpool this month if you can. Invite a friend to join you for the ride. It helps keep us talking to each other. Spaces in the lot are precious, and the lot fills up by 6 or shortly thereafter.

The fishing opportunities are wide open now. Plan on catching fish. Take a camera and use it. Trout in the Sierra, shad in the valley, bass in the ponds, stripers in the delta. Make an invitation to a club member to join you and plan a trip together. We be fishin'. We be opportunists.

How about that weather? Well, it didn't stop me from doing some fishing. I started the year off with a trip to Arnold and White Pines Lake. The weather was great for the weekend but "Boy "was the water cold. It was really good though to see a lot of the club members out there as well enjoying the day. There were a few trout caught, nothing big but it was still good to be out on the water again. We also took a trip up to Beaver Creek on Sunday but the water was around 42 degrees. Real cold !!! Not much action on that day. Still this year looks promising and i look forward to some upcoming trips and enjoying the water and some great times

Sandy Leo Writes from Russia, 5/10/99

Hi from 1/2 way around the world. I am finally over the seriously hard case of jet lag I had. I was in transit a long, long time. Left Tracy in the local airport van at 4:30 am on May 2, and arrived in Ekaterinburg airport approximately 31 hours later. ugh. The weather has been mostly cool with some rain and some snow flurries just about every other day. We have had [count them] 2 major Russian holidays, so all in all, I have only had two working days to the present time. [it is Tuesday afternoon right now]. I was planning to get out on the lake & fish yesterday afternoon, & we had the largest snow storm yet! & so didn't go out. I am glad that I got out to the K-Arrown bass ponds before I left California. DOE (Sandy works for Sandia National Lab) in its infinite wisdom restricts our non-business time on the WEB to 15 minutes, so I use all my time in email transmission. I tried to search for more news about the tornedoes in Okalahoma, but was not able to get much & so gave up on the web time. If you send me the Tracy club URL, I can try a direct link. but there is no point in searching! Our Russian server is not too bad, but slow.

Let me know how the various club activities go. I hope to be able to do a lot of the trips when I get back. Also, my fishing buddy in El Cerrito should be back on her feet [she had surgery] and would love to come with us on camping trips. We will be going off to Hat Creek sometime later in the summer.

Anyhow, keep the club rolling. Miss you guys already! By the way, leave my name in the subject line, and the guys promise not to read my mail. Sandy Leo

URGENT ALERT:

THE SOUTH YUBA RIVER NEEDS YOUR IMMEDIATE HELP

Senate Bill 496, to include the South Yuba River in the California State Wild and Scenic Rivers System, will soon be voted on by the State Senate, and the vote is expected to be very close. Proposed for protection is the 39-mile segment of the South Yuba River between Spaulding and Englebright Reservoirs.

In addition to being worthy of protection as one of the finest stretches of California's few remaining free flowing rivers, the South Yuba is a key component for the survivability of the Central Valley's wild steelhead and chinook salmon runs. Downstream of Englebright Reservoir, the Lower Yuba currently supports the Central Valley's last sustaining runs of wild steelhead and chinook salmon. Reintroduction of wild runs of salmon and steelhead into the upper Yuba River is a key restoration goal identified by CALFED and is now being very seriously considered. However, the Yuba County Water Agency is currently studying two major dam sites on the South Yuba. These dams would destroy this river forever, eliminating the possibility of ever reintroducing steelhead and salmon. And if past experience is any teacher, the operation of these dams would most certainly result in erratic water flows which would severely impact the few miles of habitat below Englebright Dam that still manages to sustain these magnificent fish.

Again, the upcoming senate vote is expected to be very close. Please write your state senator in support of SB496.

With the listing of the steelhead and potential listing of the chinook salmon, all the water users across the state of California now have a stake in the viability of these fish. It is not a local issue of interest only to anglers. You might remind our senators of this, especially those from southern California. The vote will be before June 4, and probably before May 27, so time is critical.
